THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 185 Kirkland, Glen Allan Glen was born in Edmonton, Alberta. His family moved from Wembley to McLennan in the winter of 1928. Glen took a job with the Northern Alberta Railroad in 1936 and was active in hockey and baseball. In 1942, he joined the Army and first went to England then to Europe on D-Day with the South Saskatchewan Regiment. He fought in France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany. Glen was wounded on October 22, 1944 and was astonished to find his doctor was his old hockey coach from McLellan. He was in hospital in Antwerp and was then flown to London and later Scotland. Glen returned to McLellan in 1946 and took up his old job with the railway. He was injured in a railway accident in 1951 and had a leg removed by the doctor who had treated him during World War Two. He remained in McClellan where he was a mainstay as a hockey and baseball coach until he retired and moved to Edmonton. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 153 in McClellan and later Kingsway Branch 175 in Edmonton. Glen passed away in June 1993. Kiss, Albert George George was born in London, England on November 19, 1894. He immigrated to Canada and worked as a printer until he enlisted with the 51st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force in Edmonton, Alberta on August 2, 1915. George was a Private serving with the 14th Battalion (Royal Montreal Regiment) when he was killed in action on the opening day of the Battle of Vimy Ridge onApril 9, 1917. One of the many boys from England to die on the battlefields defending the homeland, George is buried in the Nine Elms Military Cemetery at Thelus, north of Arras. Kleckner, Joseph Laurence Joseph was born in Ponoka, Alberta in 1913. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1940 and was sent to 1 Technical Training School in St. Thomas, Ontario for basic training. He was posted back to Alberta where he spent most of his five-year military service, working within the aircraft maintenance system. Joseph was discharged in Regina in 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Ponoka Branch 66 for six years. Joseph died in 2005.
