THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 1 I am pleased to welcome you to the 16th Edition of the Royal Canadian Legion Alberta-NWT Command’s Military Resource Service Recognition Book. I trust that the stories of the women and men in this book will inspire you and instill in you a sense of pride in Canada’s long and distinguished history of service. For generations, women and men in uniform have bravely stepped forward to serve so that we, and people around the world, can know the blessings of peace, freedom, human rights and the rule of law. They are heroes who deserve our deep gratitude for their sustained service. This special resource is one way that we can show our gratitude and celebrate the great legacy that they have created through their ongoing dedication and sacrifice. As His Majesty the King’s representative in Alberta, I offer my heartfelt thanks to our amazing veterans and all those who support the Royal Canadian Legion and its valued programs. I wish you continued success in your important efforts and may the proud legacies of our veterans continue to inspire us for many generations to come. Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani AOE, B.Sc. LLD (Hon) Lieutenant Governor of Alberta

THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND www.abnwtlegion.com 9 Message from Honourable R. J. Simpson, Premier of the Northwest Territories The 16th edition of the Military Resource Service Recognition Book pays homage to those who have left their homes and risked their lives to defend our country’s security and democracy while upholding the values that define us as Canadians. In this book you’ll find short stories and photos depicting the heroism and bravery displayed by veterans across Alberta and the Northwest Territories (NWT). Here in the NWT, we understand the important role the Canadian Armed Forces play in keeping residents and communities safe – their dedication and courage helped us through an unprecedented wildfire season last summer. Supporting firefighting efforts and community evacuations, their swift mobilization enabled important frontline work and alleviated strain on the territory's resources, allowing our government to continue to provide essential services to evacuees. The Government of the Northwest Territories extends gratitude to the Alberta-NWT Command of The Royal Canadian Legion and its branches for their unwavering support of veterans and active members. I appreciate and thank everyone featured in this year's Military Service Recognition Book for their selfless service. Thank you. The Honourable R.J. Simpson, Premier of the Northwest Territories

Military Service Recognition Book Volume XVI 12 Robertson was born in Albion Mines, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, on October 26th 1883. Four years later his family moved to Springhill Nova Scotia, where he received his education. In 1889, the Robertsons moved to Medicine Hat Alberta. Singing Pete – As he was known – joined the Canadian Pacific Railway where he worked his way up to Engineer and earned his nickname for his cheerful singing and whistling whether in the cab or at the roundhouse. In 1915, he joined the 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles and later, while in England, transferred to the 27th BN. The bravery that earned him the Victoria Cross made him a legend among the Locomotive Engineers the world over. “For most conspicuous bravery and outstanding devotion to duty in attack. When his platoon was held up by uncut wire and machine gun causing many casualties, PTE. Robertson dashed to an opening on the flank, rushed the machine gun and, after a desperate struggle with the crew, killed four and then turned the gun on the remainder, who, overcome by the fierceness of his onslaught, were running towards their own lines. His gallant work enabled the platoon to advance. He inflicted many more casualties among the enemy, and then carrying the captured machine gun, he led his platoon to the final objective. He there selected an excellent position and got the gun into action, firing on the retreating enemy who by this time were quite demoralized by the fire brought to bear on them. During the consolidation PTE. Robertson’s most determined use of the machine gun kept down the fire of the enemy snipers; His courage and coolness cheered his comrades and inspired them to the finest efforts. Later, when two of our snipers were badly wounded in front of our trench, he went out and carried one of them in under very severe fire. He was killed just as he returned with the second man.” (London Gazette. No 30471. 11 January 1918) TCRCHONOURS OUR TROOPS AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THEIR COURAGE AND SACRIFICE AT THE CALL OF OUR COUNTRY TEAMSTERS CANADA RAIL CONFERENCE In Honour of Pete Robertson
www.abnwtlegion.com 13 THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ALBERTA-NWT COMMAND As Alberta’s Liaison to the Canadian Armed Forces, I want to congratulate the Royal Canadian Legion Alberta-NWT Command on the 16th edition of the Military Service Recognition Book. This book helps honour and preserve the stories of bravery, dedication and service of the many men and women who have fought and continue to fight for Canada. www.abnwtlegion.com 21 It is believed that Poliomyelitis has been eradicated in Canada, which is primarily true, but even though the first effective vaccine was developed in 1955, like many viruses, it can reappear at any time. Today, we still see the debilitating effects of this disease, which struck several decades ago, worsen over time. The Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Foundation for Poliomyelitis and Rehabilitation was sponsored by the Alberta Command of The Royal Canadian Legion in 1953 and was registered as a Society on May 25, 1961. At that time, the Directors consisted of members of the Executive Committee of the Command. Currently, the Senior Executive Committee of the Alberta-NWT Command continues the tradition of sitting on the Board of Directors of the Foundation. Command Service Officers are the point of first contact. They assist clients with completing financial needs forms and request the appropriate documentation from medical professionals before applications for funds are submitted to the Board. Whenever possible and appropriate, cost sharing with other agencies is examined. Our clients range in age from 40 years and up. We still find new clients with referrals coming from medical professionals, family and current clients. Our client list continues to evolve with some individuals not requiring assistance for many years, while others continue to need on-going support. Many of the individuals we assist live on government subsidies, which puts them below the poverty line. These clients are provided with special monthly assistance grants to help them with necessities, over and above the special equipment they need. Over time, the effects of the disease worsen and their need for more and costly equipment increases. We strive to help individuals remain active in their communities. We fund this Charitable Foundation three (3) ways. A percentage from the sale of pull tickets is allocated to the Foundation. The second form of funding comes directly from an annual casino. The final source of revenue comes from donations, primarily from Ladies Auxiliaries. It is imperative that we continue to honour our commitment assisting individuals who suffer from Post Poliomyelitis. Branches are encouraged to include the Foundation when donating gaming funds to charities. If you are interested in donating, please make your cheque payable to the Polio Foundation, Alberta Chapter and mail it to our office at 2020 – 15 Street NW Calgary, AB T2M 3N8.
